I've come to the conclusion, through experimentation, both visual experiments and physical experiments, that using the arm is much more controlled for playing ppp, so I agree with you, you raise some excellent points.

Hi, Danae " the cleavage" Dörken Do you think pianos are suitable for left-handed players? I think the notes for each hand should be mirrored (two keyboards), where for each hand the notes go up from thumb to pinky finger.

Cool video... I am half a hundred years of age... I have been going back and forth on learning the piano. I am a vocalist and I love being a vocalist! Buuuuut one of my favorite tv shows has a lot of classical music in it. I am actually not a fan of classical music. I do noy like it or hate it, buuuuut pretty much every time I watched this show, I wonder is this the year that I should study the piano. Lol.... I have been researching acoustic pianos and everything! I am technically in the market for a digital piano for my studio, but that is a much longer story. I have tried to pick up the piano in the past, buuuuut I just honestly do not feel like I have the discipline for it. Buuuuuut after my show? I am like...yeah! I have the discipline! Lol... Give it a week....lol.... Who knows? If i find the right digital 88 key piano that has a piano learning software I might consider it in 2025. My logic? Start with a digital and then buy me an acoustic later. We'll see... In either case.... Thanks for sharing your experience. At least I know being a concert pianist is out. I am just too old. Lol....

Great musicians, and impressive interpretation, but sorry I must say the accustic circumstances are rather bad. The sound comes from a distance and the instrumental sound is rather an undifferented mixture. Lars Vogt was a very friendly german pianist, who died tragically early, caused by a cancer illness. RIP! 😢

I’m currently 2 weeks out from my college piano performance major audition and due to discrepancies in my younger training years I had never learned my scales until about the last 2 months. These training strategies genuinely made the difference for me getting my harmonic minors up to speed; thank you!!

Thank you, Danae! Concerning four slow notes - four fast notes: I always practise Hanon in this way (and similar like "one slow note, three fast notes oder two slow notes/two fast notes and so on). Very effective in my opinion often is: Repeating the first two notes before continuing (1-2-1-2-3-4-5-6-5-6-7-8 or similar.., depends on the situation).

I feel the idea of albums is a bit outdated in todays music landscape. They’re a stress for the artist; having to decide on a concept, compose the pieces, or shortlist existing ones, having to practice them, then record and master them, all to be released at once. I feel a better option today is to release single or smaller collections of pieces more frequently, both for the sake of the artist and to keep listeners engaged. Pattreons, Podcasts, UA-cam memberships etc all offer new ways for artists to release music to listeners in a more fluid way.

Thank you for these excellent insights. I recently played a Bach French Suite in a public context, and I used many of the same tactics-mentally slowing certain busy passages, for instance, or paying attention to the musical expression. These tactics helped! One common problem: some rhythm patterns (e.g., long-short-short) can rush without our realizing it, so that we start to practice them into the playing. And then, under stress, the rushing gets worse. So, we have to practice with evenness from the beginning. Perhaps most importantly, one must be thoroughly prepared in the first place. We often don’t know a piece as well as we think we do, and if there is an unresolved trouble spot, it will certainly give the pianist trouble in the heat of performance!

I started piano at age 8 and played everyday but didn’t truly start practicing seriously until about mid teenage years, currently I am 20 and in college as a piano performance and music management double major. Im still thinking about what I want to do in the future and unsure about what possibilities there are for me with a career in music that could provide me a stable income.

Anyone else notice that she has 1. An unusually long 5th finger and 2. An especially wide space between fingers 4 and 5 ? This would make this etude easier (although still difficult) for her than many others without those advantages. Caution should be used on some of the left hand exercises; holding widely stretched positions for long periods can create tension and tendonitis problems.

Is that a period correct piano, or perhaps one like Mozart would have played?
